How to DIY a Mary Poppins Costume
Ah, the Mary Poppins infamous hat. These can be created easily with a felt hat or a cheap black derby hat and applying flowers via a hot glue gun. Or you can buy the the above hat from a talented artist on Etsy.
A key part of the costume is Mary Poppins red bow tie. You can find bow ties on Amazon starting at $5, or use ribbon or leftover holiday decorations!
Who would Mary Poppins be without her ruffled shirt? If you don’t have one of these in your closet they average about $30. Or settle for a simple white button down shirt!
Over the course of the film, Mary Poppins wears several jackets from peacoats to Victorian jackets in black or navy. Have a dark colored coat at home? Use that as your Mary Poppins trench coat. Gray works too!
While buying Mary Poppins’ original carpetbag can get expensive, use any large bag you have at home!
The Parrot Umbrella
Some parrot umbrellas go for upwards of $150! You can probably get away with a simple black umbrella. But for those of you who want the real deal, there’s plenty of parrot head DIYs to help make your Mary Poppins look!
For Mary Poppins, any knee to floor length black skirt you have at home will do the trick!
Mary Poppins is known for her Oxford heels. If you don’t have any at home, you can easily get away with a simple pair of black flats or heels.
Best of luck on your costume creation! Join us Sunday, February 10 for our Mary Poppins Sing-Along at 4 PM. Come early for games and a meet and greet with Mary Poppins and Bert. And feel free to wear your own Mary Poppins costume!
