After a thrilling week of outdoor performances, join us for the finale of the 36th Annual Battery Dance Festival with special presentations by Bollylicious from Belgium and Mophato Dance Theatre from Botswana, along with the reprise of Battery Dance’s On Foot, “An expressive voice for refugees and their plight …. Outstanding”
– Joel Benjamin, Theater Scene
Battery Dance (On Foot) Jonathan Hollander has assembled artistic forces that pair the Company’s brilliant ensemble of dancers with Kevork Mourad and Kinan Azmeh, Syria-born visual artist and musician respectively; Tunisian composer Anouar Brahem; and Iraqi dancer Hussein Smko, first recipient of the Company’s Adel Euro Campaign for Dancers Seeking Refuge. This powerful collaboration yields choreography, visual imagery and music that pulsates with the life-force of refugees who overcome staggering odds to reach safety and promise in new lands, while mourning lost family and community members, perished dreams and destroyed homelands.
Bollylicious (Yatra) The Belgium-based dance collective will present Yatra, an elegant blend of folk dances such as Ghoomar and Kalbeliya dance with an original Bollylicious touch, blending Indian folk and classical forms with a Contemporary dance.
Mophato Dance Theatre (Pula) Founded in 2009 by Andrew Letso Kola, Mophato Dance Theatre (MDT) is Botswana’s first Afro-Fusion and Contemporary dance company. Since its inception, Mophato Dance Theatre has performed across Africa and Europe. Mophato’s Battery Dance Festival performances are the Company’s first in America.
